What is a motorcycle quickshifter?

A motorcycle quickshifter is an electro-mechanical device designed to facilitate seamless upshifting without the need to engage the clutch or adjust the throttle. Originally developed for motorcycle racing, its primary function is to enable rapid gear changes, significantly reducing shift times compared to conventional clutch operation while minimizing transmission wear.

How does a quickshifter work ?

For smooth gear shifting without causing transmission damage, the motorcycle engine must momentarily disengage from the transmission. When power delivery to the transmission is interrupted, the gears become “unloaded,” allowing for a seamless shift. Traditionally, this is achieved by pulling in the clutch lever and rolling off the throttle, which relieves engine power from the transmission to facilitate a smooth gear change.

A quickshifter streamlines this process by integrating a sensor into the motorcycle’s shift linkage. When the rider engages the foot shift control, the sensor signals the control module to momentarily cut fuel and/or ignition for a few milliseconds. This brief interruption unloads the transmission, enabling precise and rapid upshifts without throttle modulation or clutch engagement.

Because motorcycles are harsh environments—with constant vibration, load changes, temperature shifts, and electromagnetic interference (EMF) from ignition systems—accurate signal detection can be challenging. To ensure consistent performance, our system integrates a Kalman filter, an advanced algorithm that filters out environmental noise and interference.

When a shift is detected, the system briefly interrupts the ignition for just milliseconds, unloading the transmission and allowing for lightning-fast gear changes. The result is a refined, race-inspired shifting experience that performs flawlessly on both street and track.

Does the quickshifter work for both upshifting and downshifting ?

The quickshifter is designed exclusively for upshifts and does not enable clutchless downshifting.
